Perusing the Rightwing blogs these days you find a lot of doom and gloom. Many GOPers are buying into the liberal media spin that the problem for Republicans is their philosophy - conservatism, and the fact that they're so "extreme" in their anti-government views.
I don't see it. Sorry. It's not the problem with Republicans messing up the brand Republican. It's the liberal media. The shrinking poll numbers for the generic Republican Party brand is simply a reflection of the effectiveness of liberal media attacks on the GOP.
Consider:
George W. Bush has won not one, but two Wars under his administration: Afghanistan and Iraq. We caught Saddam Hussein, and then hanged him a year later. We killed his two ugly bloodthirsty murderous sons Uday and Qusay. After a year of the media crying "We may have got Saddam, but Zarcawi is still loose," we got him too. The War in Iraq was simply one of the most glorious victories for the United States Military in the history of our Nation. Afghanistan was won with lightening speed; less than 6 weeks. Both countries today are living under relative peace and calm with struggling but steady near democratic governments. They are beacons of light for the entire Middle East and South Asia.Republicans share some of the blame, but not for issue stances, rather for being so naiive in face of such a massive liberal media onslaught. Sure, some fight back. Fox News is an outlet for regular GOP talking heads. But mostly Republicans cower in face of the liberal media Titans. They refuse to go for the jugular, cuss, scream and shout at the liberal media thugs, for fear of being perceived as "too unfriendly."
Then there was Katrina: A stunning success by the Federal Government response, mainly the brave Coast Guard. Bush himself deserved a great deal of credit for the Feds' very rapid response. But it was a complete and utter disaster for the Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and the New Orleans Mayor Nagen. (Remember the infamous school bus incident where Nagen's fleet sat in the parking lot instead of being used for evacuation?) How did the media spin it? Can't blame the woman Governor nor the whiny ever-complaining puppy-eyed Mayor. Blame it on Bush and the Republicans, of course.
Economy? Going on 7 years of solid growth thanks to the Bush tax cuts early on in his administration and the general Pro-Business deregulation climate promoted by administration officials. Media spin? Once again, Housing Crisis, not the fault of creditors who engaged in highly speculative lending to people who had no earthly means of buying and sustaining payments on a home. Nope. Blame it on Bush.
Energy? Media spin, blame it on Bush, not the Environmentalists who won't allow us to drill at the ANWR and off our Coasts. Story after story about Bush's failures on bringing down gas prices on average Americans. Meanwhile the media covers up the fact that nearly 30% of each dollar put into one's gas tank goes to the government at all levels by way of a myriad of taxes to state, federal and local governments.
The fact that Republicans have sunk so low, simply shows that it's very difficult to defeat the liberal media. They are all-powerful. It's not the GOP's fault. Conservatives and libertarians need to take every opportunity to point out the massive bias in the liberal media against limited government principles. Or else, we'll continue to see the GOP brand sink in the polls amongst gullible Americans.

Eric,
Don't forget that the "Bush waited too long to help NO after Katrina because they were blacks" is totall BS by the media.
The president cannot send federal aid or troops to any state in the union without the consent of the governor of a state. the delay in troops and aid was because of the governor of La and the mayor of NO, not the federal goverenment.
Unless of course the liberals wanted Bush to invoke the Inserrection Act and then they really would have cried about a "dictatorship"
I worked the Katrina relief effort at the Houston Astrodome for 6 weeks. I can tell you from first hand experience, the Federal response was massive and swift. Whatever the mostly Black victims of Katrina wanted, they got for the asking. There was even fraud on a massive scale as "victims" some folks who didn't even live in the New Orleans area, got check after check from the Feds to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
The media barely covered the fraud aspect of Katrina. But they damn sure gave Bush a hard time for not acting fast enough.
exactly andrew, the liberal media, lew rockwell and company and the DNC would've been calling for his impeachment asap had he done that. interestingly when Hurricane Floyd hit NC in the 90's, FEMA did come in until over a month later.
also, the people of louisianna appear to be the only people that understand this and went and elected Jindal, the first GOP Gov. since reconstruction there, and booted out their incompetent gov. blanco.
I think all future GOP presidents need a cabinet spot completely dedicated to taking liberal media lies and distortions face on and getting the message out.
Not only do I hear libs say that "Saddam was in no way connected to terrorist or Al-Qaead" but now you hear some weak minded/ignorant conservatives re-state this propaganda.
Excellent article, Eric. I agree completely.
Many conservatives are upset about the out of control spending and a lack of action on border security - and those are understandable concerns.
A few are just upset the conservative base isn't wagging the dog anymore.
Bush does have a number of impressive accomplishments under his belt, and historians will realize that President Bush wasn't to blame for Katrina.
I never used to really consider myself a member of either party - but during the Bush Presidency I have been appalled at the Democrats zeal to sell out their country for political gain and the liberal media's blatant bias.
I'm surprised their blind hatred towards Bush and FOX News haven't made more Americans realize how pathetic the Democrat Party has become.
what NBC did recently to Bush is near treasonous, but definitely shows they are not a legitimate news orginization. Ed Gillepsie's letter to them is classic, he brings up how they are no longer referring to Iraq as a "Civil War" but doing so quietly and asking their position now. After in Nov. 2006 they made a big announcement, against the govts. of Iraq and USA on the matter, just claiming it was a "civil war".
Egg all over the faces, except Joe Blow casually watching has no clue.
is this thing on?
