Lew Rockwell and Paleos goes nuts over Pledge of Allegiance controversy

by Andrew Murphy

Sometimes a small incident really brings out the worst in people. Lew Rockwell, the founder of the Mises Institute and of LewRockwell.com has gone ballistic over the incident regarding three eight-graders who refused to say their Pledge of Allegiance last week in a Minnesota public school.

Here is a link to the Minnesota Star Tribune story:

If it was for religious reasons, most people have no beef with what these children did or did not do. However, the response over on LewRockwell Blog has been a temper tantrum of historical revisionism regarding the Pledge of Allegiance.

Here is Lew Rockwell original response to the Minnesota story:

The "Pledge of Allegiance" is an anti-secessionist oath of fealty to centralized government and its myths. Imposed on kids forced to attend government schools and other victims, it was written by an atheist Baptist minister and socialist after Lincoln's War. Ike added "under God" during the US Cold War against Russia, to keep the hierarchy of authority straight in everyone's mind:

1. God
2. Government
3. You

Now, three small-town eighth-graders have been suspended for refusing to stand for the daily federal oath. Future libertarians? (Thanks to Blake W. Imeson.)

There are so many historical errors in Rockwell's brief tantrum it is hard to know where to begin.

The Pledge of Allegiance was not written by an atheist Baptist minister. Francis Bellamy was indeed a socialist but he was very much a Christian. He was a member of Society for Christian Socialists. Now if Mr. Rockwell is going to dismiss and smear someone simply because that individual was a socialist then perhaps Mr. Rockwell needs to stop caring John Pilger's columns on his LewRockwell.com website.

There are over 50 articles by Pilger on the LewRockwell.com

What Eric, no mention of the McCain adviser who resigned because of his connections to the Myanmar govt. and shady dealingz? The same regime that mistreats their people so terribly? McCain is TOTAL hypocrit, and so are his followers here. I am reading "Pure Goldwater" and correspondence between Goldwater and McCain: it is clear that for McCain it has been all for himself, not the party. This is the reason why Goldwater did not like him later and could be a reason for the GOP distancing themselves from McCain if they still do want to stay united and have a fighting chance to win.

stefan, what does that have to do with the fact that Lew Rockwell hates the Pledge of Alligence because it was written by a socialist even though John Pilger, a militant socialist posts his columns all the time over at LewRockwell.com.

Andrew, well it does everything to do with the politician you want to swear the pledge of alligence to by voting for him and whose interventionist warmon- gering policy (regardless whether there were WMD or not) you support and defend...or have you seen the light in the meantime? In that case, I solemly accept you and acknowledge anyone can make a mistake.
