LIBERTARIAN REPUBLICAN CHOSEN FOR MCCAIN'S VP!!

Fox News just confirmed:

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has been officially chosen as John McCain's Vice Presidential candidate.

Carl Cameron of Fox says that confirmation has come from a "top McCain official" on the ground in Dayton, OH, and was careful to note that it wasn't just from a "top GOP official."

The Washington Post and other sources are also confirming the pick of Palin.

Sarah Palin has long been considered to be a libertarian-leaning Republican. As Mayor of Wasila (Anchorage suburb), Palin was friends with local libertarian Republican elected officials, and worked closely with them on tax cut proposals.

She is known to have spoken to two Libertarian Party meetings in 2004/05. She was endorsed by the Libertarian Party of Alaska in the final days of her race for Governor in 2006, even though the LP had it's own candidate. On election night, Ms. Palin at the Egan Center, went out of her way to acknowledge the Libertarian Party's support in her victory speech. Immediately afterwards, she embraced then LPA Chairman Jason Dowell in the crowd. Dowell, and other Libertarians had stood on street corners waving signs for Palin the final two days.

Editor's Note - As many of you all know, our own Contributing Writer Adam Brickley of Colorado is the Founder and Chairman of the Draft Sarah Palin for VP Campaign. (I guess, as of this moment the group should happily go defunct.) We are extremely proud of Adam's efforts. And we are proud to have lent our support to Adam, and played a role in this effort.

UPDATE!

Libertarian-leaning Club for Growth rejoices over Palin Pick

From CFG website:

“At a time when many Republicans are still clinging to pork-barrel politics, Governor Palin has quickly become a leader on this issue,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “She is a principled reformer who understands how badly wasteful spending has marred the Republican brand.”

UPDATE!!

LR Writer Adam Brickley mentioned on Fox News

John Scott of Fox News just noted our own Adam Brickley, saying "There's a blogger out of Colorado who has been pushing her for quite some time for VP who says she's known as Sarah Baracuda..."

UPDATE!

Libertarian-leaning Conservative Fred Thompson is "delighted" with Palin pick

From The Weekly Standard Blog:

"I am absolutely delighted by this selection. Once again, John McCain has shown that he is an independent thinker who paints in bold strokes. Sarah Palin is a conservative reformer with executive experience who will bring a breath of fresh air to Washington. She will be an ideal running mate for John McCain, and will make a major contribution to our country's future."
UPDATE!

Number One Republican Blog RedState admits they were head-faked by McCain camp, and they are loving it!

From Erick Erickson:

I've got to say, I don't know a single person who was pushed in the Pawlenty misdirection who cares.

Pawlenty who? This is an epic win.

Sarah Palin is pro-life. She is a hunter and fisher. She is a mom. She is a reformer... from what we've seen already, she is awesome.

The GOP is more united than the Dems have been. We just got more so. And we got a lot of new voters too.

Epic. Win.

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and I'll see you with a double Yes.

Fred, this is a truly wonderful day to be a libertarian.

Can you believe this? This is the day we've all been waiting for.

Eric, I have to give you credit for bringing Palin to my attention some time ago.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one, but I met McCain in October of last year in Orlando and said he should pick Mark Sanford or Sarah Palin as a running mate.

I guess a confident handshake goes a long way!

Eric Dondero said...

Thank you Tom. From an old friend like you - we go back 25 years - that means a lot. It really does. I'm literally in tears right now.

I gotta say, my life has been truly amazing. This tops it all: Serving as Travel Aide in the 1988 Libertarian Presidential campaign, Founding the Republican Liberty Caucus, getting Ron Paul elected to Congress in 1996, even creating this Libertarian Republican blog.

This tops it all. This is historic of huge proportions, on so many levels: The obvious - She's a woman, but also, cause she's a libertarian, AND an Alaskan.

My gosh. There's nothing left to say. Except Life truly is Beautiful.

Lost in all this silly self appreciation is the fact Dondero was wrong AGAIN with all of his breaking news and reliable sources. All smoke and mirrors, much like this so-called "libertarian" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) Republican VP pick.

Eric Dondero said...

Yes, I was completely wrong. Absolutely wrong. And isn't it sweet.

Just goes to prove how brillantly McCain and McCain insiders played all this, and fooled us Bloggers.

I simply followed the lead of Erik Erikson at RedSTate.com. If you can't trust RedState on breaking Republican news, who can you trust?

Tells me that the McCain camp deliberately misled Erickson and RedState. But something tells me Erickson is not too angry this morning about being misled.

Eric Dondero said...

Scott, nothing you say today will cloud the wonderful emotions I am feeling right now. Go ahead, try as you might.

Besides the day I got married to my beautiful wife Shandra, this is truly the greatest day of my life. This is the culmination of all me dreams come true. For 25 years I've worked to build the libertarian movement at all levels.

And today we have a libertarian Vice-Presidential candidate, a woman whom I campaigned for by her side in Anchorage, Alaska two days before her election to Governor.

Bitch away Scott. Nothing can bring me down from the clouds today, even your typical cynical sniping.

It's true, my libertarian comrades.

Everyone has to work as hard as possible for McCain/Palin now! We need all libertarians help to defeat Senator Obama.

Senator John McCain listened to libertarians, now he needs all of your help to come on board and help elect him President of the United States and Sarah Palin the first libertarian female of the United States.

Please go to www.johnmcain.com now

Senator McCain has reached out a hand to libertarians. Now he needs your help to win the White House

"libertarian female Vice President"

I meant to type ;)Damn blackberry

Ryan Christiano said...

Congrats, Eric. Sorry you were intentionally pump faked. I hope you can forgive, I knew you would be happy.

Eric Dondero said...

Thanks Ryan. I actually appreciate being head-faked, particularly for this reason. Sometimes in life, you just gotta do what you gotta do, even though it may temporarily put your friends in a tough position. In the end, your strategy worked.

You're a true friend and fellow partner in our lifelong struggle for liberty.

Twalls said...

I'm feeling it too, man! I just saw her introduction in Dayton. I never thought we'd be so lucky. This is a really brilliant, surprising choice that has many of us rejoicing.

I'm very pleased McCain didn't go with Ridge, Mittens, the 'Joetivator' or boring Tim Polenta. None of them would have brought that much to the ticket.

Already, they're grasping for an angle to attack her. How lame. At one point she sought to have her ex-brother-in-law (a state trooper) fired. They're not mentioning that the trooper threatened to kill her dad and to "bring her down" if her sister Molly hired a lawyer in a custody case.

Heeeee Hawwwwwwwww!!!!!! And I NEVER use more than one exclamation point!!! Of course y'all know who I'm voting for now!

Damn, this cleared my 'ol sinus glands good and proper. I love Sarah Palin! Look out you commie bastards, Sarah is in town!

Drill! Drill! Drill!

GO Sarah! Hoorah!

Is she really a libertarian? What is her position on the Iraq war? Or foreign intervention in general? Does anyone know?

When Dondero and Walls are done pulling their puds to the Eskimo MILF, could someone tell me what the hell is so libertarian about this chick?

I still back Barr, but I'll give McCain credit here. Picking Palin was a stroke of genius.

Well, knowing Dondero as we do, she's a libertarin (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) because she wants to kill Muslims and do away with seat belt laws. You know, the standard libertarian litmus test.

Nexus said...

"When Dondero and Walls are done pulling their puds to the Eskimo MILF"
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

So, Mrs. Keaton is hot AND clever....a very powerful combo.

rob latham said...

Palin is an intriguing choice by McCain.

Like Keaton, I'll be examining the libertarian bona fides of Ms. Palin.

Dondero has said that Palin has both attended Libertarian Party of Alaska meetings, and was endorsed by the Libertarian Party of Alaska in the governor's race.

First, could someone from the Libertarian Party of Alaska confirm that these two things (meetings and endorsement) happened?

Second, although I'm not a big fan of this rule (the LNC's 2007-2008 Bylaws Committee proposed a change to it to accommodate a Ron Paul endorsement), Article 6, Section 4 of the LNC's current bylaws do state that:
No affiliate party shall endorse any candidate who is a member of another party for public
office in any partisan election. No affiliate party shall take any action inconsistent with the
Statement of Principles or these Bylaws.

Yesterday was my 54th birthday, and as I have mentioned before, I would gladly ship over (re-enlist for non Sailor/Marines) to serve my country once again. Hell, scrubbing heads would be an honor at this point; ANYTHING I can do to pay tributeand be of service to our troops.

By John McCain picking Sarah Palin to be his running mate, I received the best birthday present I could possibly hope for; for this is finally a moment when we have an opportunity to marginalize the radical left once and for all. A great time for libertarian Republicans indeed.

" "He's a good guy," she added. "He's so independent. He's independent of the party machine. I'm like, 'Right on, so am I.'"

most brilliant GOP political move in years

Scott,

Palin was endorsed by the LP in Alaska when she ran for Gov and has spoke to their party several times. This is not a Dondero mythology, in fact, Palin is actually more social conservative then Eric is. She is a member of Feminists for Life and Eric is a militant pro-choicer.

Andrew, I'm not a "militant" Pro-Choicer. I'm hardcore Pro-Choice. But also in favor of parental consent laws, ending all subsidies for abortion, and generally opposed to late term abortions.

And yes, I disagreed with Gov. Palin on the abortion issue when she first ran, but still very much supported her.

Eric Dondero said...

William, correction. This is the GREATEST TIME FOR LIBERTARIAN REPUBLICANS EVER IN THE HISTORY OF OUR MOVEMENT.

I can not think of a better moment ever for Libertarian Republicans. Maybe when Dana Rohrabacher was first elected to Congress ion 1986? William Weld being elected to Governor of Massachusetts in 1990. But that's all I can think of, that would compare to this.

Eric Dondero said...

Angela, at least Tom and I are not pulling each other's "puds". You gotta give us that, no?

Eric Dondero said...

I agree Jonathan. This was a stroke of genius on McCain's part. This is perhaps the most brillant move by any politician in the US in decades.

Angela Keaton said...

Eric,

Tom's a good looking guy so if one were to pull his pud, I'd understand. You are both horn dogs however so don't even try to pretend that there was no pud pulling upon this historical announcement.

However, for historical and hard core pud pulling, real libertarians are voting Keaton/Shinghal '12.

A ticket Americans can get behind.

Andrew said...

Eric,

My point was not to knock Palin only to show Scott that unlike the tunnel vision Paulites where it is there way or the highway, other libertarians can still support libertarian leaning candidates without agreeing with everything they say.

Eric Dondero said...

Angela, I'd rather Tom not pull my pud. But you my dear, are welcome to do so any time.

(just kidding - my wife would slap me kick me upside the head Chinese style)

Knapp, write this down: Dondero asks Anarchist to Pull Pud.

That's almost New York Post worthy.

Tom Walls,

Hey. When you got Eric Dondero and Lew Rockwell in simpatico with a choice for the VP spot on the GOP, you know it was probably a good choice.

You probably won't see something like that again until Haley's Comet swings by again.

Eric,

Thanks for the comment.

I'm a little late to the party for a libertarian. My first post on Palin was 26 May 008.

I must say I'm totally delighted at McCain's pick.

You might want to check out this thread at Just One Minute where there are a lot of libertarian Republicans.

Also check out Charlie Martin at Pajamas Media. Esp his latest on the OODA loop. I have done some on that myself. He blogged the Dem Convention and was one of the guys protecting Michelle Malkin from the Dem thugs. Charlie comments at JOM as Charlie (Colorado). He is another lib R.

Any way - good to be aboard.

Let me add that Classical Values is another Libertarian Republican site.

I have posting privileges there.

It is not strictly political. We do all kinds of stuff. Including music videos and diary kinds of stuff. Eric is a big Dead Head (me too) although I am also a big Airplane fan.
