Cultural Liberal Blog calls Mackey "a libertarian dick." by Eric Dondero
A major controversy is brewing on the cultural left. John Mackey, Founder & CEO of Whole Foods Grocery Store chain, a darling of cultural liberals from Vermont to Seattle to the Bay Area, has come out strongly against Obama Care. In and editorial today in the Wall Street Journal Mackey wrote, in "The Whole Foods Alternative to Obama Care":
With a projected $1.8 trillion deficit for 2009, several trillions more in deficits projected over the next decade, and with both Medicare and Social Security entitlement spending about to ratchet up several notches over the next 15 years as Baby Boomers become eligible for both, we are rapidly running out of other people's money. These deficits are simply not sustainable. They are either going to result in unprecedented new taxes and inflation, or they will bankrupt us.Mackey even had the audacity to quote one of the most hated figures among liberals:
"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run outABC News reports that Mackey's pro-free market comments have sparked a boycott:
of other people's money." -- Lady Margaret Thatcher
"I will never shop there again," vowed Joshua, a 45-year-old blogger, who asked that his last name not be published. One promiment Left blogger - Culture Lobster - even wrote:
"I'm boycotting [Whole Foods] because all Americans need health care," said Lent, 33, who used to visit his local Whole Foods "several times a week."
I already knew that Whole Foods CEO John Mackey was an anti-union, libertarian dick... thanks to his op-ed in the Wall Street Journal (The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare) everyone else knows too!Mackey has referred to himself as a "libertarian," on many occasions in interviews in the past.
Whole Foods was always too expensive for me anyway.
The proposed boycott may have already spawned a counter-boycott among his libertarian supporters. What Progressives have not figured, is that not everybody who is culturally left, is similarly economically left. Beyond the counter-boycott, the Leftist sponsored boycott could contribute to a more permanent split with cultural libertarians.
A prominent leader of the libertarian movement, Doug Bandow is now calling for an Anti-Boycott of Whole Foods.
From American Spectator:
My eating habits are pretty simple--and awful, so I just shop at the closest supermarket. But opponents of a government health care takeover might want to consider dropping by Whole Foods. It seems that some advocates of nationalized medicine are boycotting the store after its CEO, John Mackey, wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal opposing Obamacare...What makes Bandow's rejection of the Left on this issue, so interesting (and sweet), is that he's one of the leaders of Anti-War/Paleo wing of the libertarian movement that's been preaching alliances with Liberals/Progressives for years.
it is good to see at least one company stand on principle.

That ad was totally annoying. I was using tabs and all of a sudden this techno teen music came on advertising Teen TV, and I am like what the...
Anyway, this is funny. I want to shop there more, but we don't have one in Southwest Missouri. The guy is obviously a capitialist who saw a need, and his idiot customers aren't even smart enough to realize that.
What are they going to do now? Go back to genitically altered food? Mackey knows they will be back because it's hard to shop especially with HR875 on the horizon.
Come to Georgia John, we'll shop there!
That HR875 is ridiculous, they can't do their job of inspecting properly and their answer is to make it harder on us to get decent food! And the effect on my backyard garden will be......
Anyone have a link? I can't find the article.
I haven't shopped at Whole Foods often, but I will make it a point to go there every week now!
Libertarians don't shop at Whole Paycheck. They prefer the most toxic, corporate food that the "free market" can poison them with.
One thing I balk at WF is their prices on meat. Just WAY too expensive for my upper middle class income. People who exclusively do their shopping at WF are the rich. I buy my meats at Trader Joes which caters to middle class incomes.
Maybe this will make WF lower their prices.
Dondero, you put it best when you called Mackey a "cultural liberal." That does not mean he's a political liberal. Whole Foods was founded in Austin, TX. And as a local talk show host here named Jeff Ward put it, "this guy is more libertarian than I am...I love how all of you complain about Wallmart coming into town and using their ruthless business practices to run Mom and Pop out of business, but what about Whole Foods? Sure, nothing fraudulent, but they do everything in their power to undercut the competition...capitalism in action."
Well, I don't live near a Whole Foods, but I wrote to tell them I support them--and this year Christmas Gifts for anybody I know and love that lives near a Whole Foods store will be a gift certificate there.
GO WHOLE FOODS!
The bash is not all "Leftist". I am a registered Libertarian and I was a supporter of the 1980s move to "managed health care". Then I watched as the health insurance providers began to use rescission to break their contracts.
I just fired my local Whole Foods store.
what is with all the national socialists insisting that consumer choice is sinister?
It's always interesting watching fake libertarians wave their hands in outrage at citizens who actually make decisions with their wallet...
Anonymous, you have every right to boycott Whole Foods and I have every right to tell you how dumb that is!
It looks like you’re just trying to silence your political opposition by boycotting a business with an outspoken libertarian as a CEO. Democracy is supposed to involve rational debate, which he was engaging in-- but the boycotters seem to be against that (which I thought was part of liberalism, but apparently not to them).
But, heck, go ahead and boycott libertarians-- even so-called "liberals" are allowed to practice the market freedom they would deny to others.
